Shaldon Kopman started his menswear brand, Naked Ape, in 2005, and officially launched it at SA Fashion Week, in October 2010. Categorised as a high-end fashion brand focussing on menswear, footwear, and accessories, the brand is a culmination of Shaldon’s need for expertly tailored garments, blended with a strong, urban aesthetic for the suit and street savvy individual.
Naked Ape’s conscientious approach to fashion dictates the use of ecological and economical fabrics, incorporating natural fibres and blends that predominantly comprise of cotton, wool, linen, hemp, bamboo, silk, and leather. The design house continuously takes into consideration environmental and social matters, considering the brands impact during every point of the design process. Shaldon has designed garments for celebrities such as Boris Kodjoe, Laurence Fishburne, Kirk Whalum, Orlando Jones, and Samuel L. Jackson and notes one of the highlights of his career as being the design and production of eco-garments for Barack and Michelle Obama. Naked Ape women’s wear is on the cards for the near future.
