ABOUT
MINA, founded by fashion designer Shaazia Adam in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, hails from Maputo, Mozambique. Pioneering sustainability, it produces 90% of its garments locally in standard sizes, using natural fibers like cotton and linen. Collaborating with local artisans, MINA crafts accessories and details for its minimalist, functional designs, suitable for day or night wear. Embracing slow fashion, the brand manufactures in-house with muted stock, offering customization in color.
Inspiration for this collection for South Africa fashion week took me in a journey of the freedom of being oneself.
From the depths of the sea, when the water cold as we swim with no air and in movement seeking for the freedom of being, swimming up the shore for air or liberation. We looked at shells, corals and jelly fish and the ripples created on the sand by the waves, macrame that represents the knotting and feeling of being tied and liberating to freedom of being.
We will not be using print on the fabric however we are using the technique of macrame.
I consider that I am a different designer from the other because I try to explore different techniques by collaborating with other local artists to develop new accessories and techniques in our garments. We also are a brand working towards sustainability, we use upcycling techniques and try reduce our waste as low as possible. Distinguished by innovation and a commitment to sustainability, MINA empowers orphaned girls through sewing training and job opportunities..
